Intensive Psychiatric Care: Hospitalization & PHP

Hospitalization

Most of the time, you will go through your local hospital ER for hospitalization, however there are two urgent care centers run by Sheppard Pratt as an option. They can evaluate clients to go to Shepherd Pratt for hospitalization.

If this is an emergency PLEASE DIAL 911, CONTACT YOUR LOCAL CRISIS SERVICES or GO TO YOUR NEAREST EMERGENCY ROOM. If you think you might hurt yourself or someone else, that is a psychiatric emergency and you should not wait for a therapy appointment. The emergency room can help you get medication and/or services so that you are not a danger to yourself or others. Psychiatrists often have long waiting period for appointments so they’re generally not a viable option if you’re in crisis.

Partial Hospitalization Programs (PHP): Psychiatric Day Hospitals

Hopkins Medicine: Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Day Hospital

Accepts 5th grade & Up

The Child and Adolescent Day Hospital, also know as partial hospitalization, serves as a ‘step-up’ program for patients in outpatient programs who need more intensive treatment and as a ‘step-down’ program for patients on inpatient units who are transitioning back to outpatient care. Youngsters arrive in the morning and spend the day involved in individual and group therapeutic activities, attend school on site, and then return home each afternoon.

The service is designed for youth between the ages of 5 to 17 and focuses on combining individual therapy, family therapy, behavioral interventions, occupational therapy, medication management, school advocacy, and systems coordination to facilitate keeping the child at home, in school, and in regular outpatient treatment. Intensive aftercare planning is a core component of the program and family participation is a critical element. Staff work with youngsters and families to optimize a transition back home.
